Job Description

We are seeking dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to join our Canal & Waterway Maintenance Crew. This outdoor government role involves hands-on work to preserve and improve Kingston upon Hull’s beautiful and historically significant waterways. You will be part of a vital team responsible for the day-to-day upkeep, ensuring they remain safe, clean, and enjoyable for all residents and wildlife. This is a physically active role that offers the reward of working outdoors and contributing directly to the community’s well-being.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections of canals, rivers, and surrounding areas.
  • Perform vegetation management, including cutting reeds, clearing overgrown banks, and removing invasive species.
  • Participate in litter collection and debris removal from waterways and towpaths.
  • Carry out minor repairs to towpaths, bridges, and other canal infrastructure.
  • Operate and maintain various hand tools and small machinery safely and efficiently.
  • Monitor water levels and report any unusual conditions or potential hazards.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure all tasks are completed to a high standard.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations and environmental guidelines.

Required Skills

  • Physical fitness and ability to perform demanding outdoor work in all weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic first aid certification.
  • Experience operating small plant machinery (e.g., strimmers, brush cutters).
