Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Ship Captain to join our team, operating various vessels along the navigable waterways of West Yorkshire. This role requires a proficient mariner with a strong commitment to safety, an excellent understanding of inland navigation regulations, and the ability to manage both vessel and crew effectively. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe passage of our vessels, ensuring all operations comply with maritime laws and company policies, while contributing to the upkeep and development of our historic canal network.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely operate vessels on designated waterways, adhering to all navigation rules and regulations.
  • Lead and manage the vessel crew, ensuring efficient teamwork and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Conduct pre-departure checks, maintain accurate logbooks, and report any incidents or defects promptly.
  • Oversee the loading, unloading, and securing of cargo or equipment as required.
  • Ensure the vessel and its equipment are maintained to a high standard of cleanliness and operational readiness.
  • Navigate through locks, bridges, and other waterway structures with precision and care.
  • Communicate effectively with other waterway users, lock keepers, and operations staff.
  • Participate in routine vessel maintenance and minor repairs as necessary.
  • Adhere to environmental protection guidelines and promote sustainable practices.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years (36 months) proven experience as a vessel captain or master on inland waterways.
  • Valid Certificate of Competency for Inland Waterways Vessels (or equivalent recognized qualification).
  • In-depth knowledge of inland navigation rules, buoyage systems, and local waterway characteristics.
  • Strong leadership and crew management abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Proficiency in basic vessel maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Commitment to health, safety, and environmental protection.

Preferred Qualifications

  • First Aid at Work certification.
  • Experience with a variety of vessel types (e.g., barges, workboats, passenger vessels).
  • Knowledge of the specific West Yorkshire canal and river network.
  • Mechanical or engineering background relevant to vessel operation.
