Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Venture Capital Principal to join our growing team in Abbotsford, BC. This role is pivotal in identifying, evaluating, and executing investment opportunities, as well as actively supporting our portfolio companies to achieve their strategic milestones. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of venture capital deal flow, financial modeling, and the ability to build strong relationships with founders and co-investors. This position offers sponsorship for qualified international candidates looking to establish a career in the Canadian venture capital landscape.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead deal sourcing efforts, actively identifying and engaging with promising startups through networking, industry events, and direct outreach.
- Conduct thorough due diligence, including market analysis, competitive landscaping, financial modeling, and team assessment.
- Present investment recommendations to the Investment Committee with well-researched and articulate analyses.
- Negotiate deal terms, structure investments, and manage the legal closing process.
- Provide ongoing strategic support and guidance to portfolio companies, including fundraising, talent acquisition, and operational improvements.
- Actively participate in board meetings and contribute to the strategic direction of portfolio companies.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with entrepreneurs, co-investors, limited partners, and industry stakeholders.
- Monitor market trends and develop investment theses for emerging sectors.
- Mentor and support junior team members in their professional development.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, or corporate development.
- Strong financial modeling and analytical skills, with the ability to dissect complex business models.
- Excellent communication and presentation abilities, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to source deals and build a robust network within the startup and investment communities.
- Understanding of legal aspects related to venture investments.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- MBA or equivalent advanced degree.
- CFA designation.
- Prior experience working with early-stage or growth-stage technology companies.
- Specific domain expertise in sectors relevant to Fraser Valley Ventures (e.g., AgTech, CleanTech, SaaS).
- Experience with international investment frameworks and legal structures.
