Job Description
NHS Tayside is seeking an exceptional and highly motivated Consultant Surgeon to join our esteemed surgical department in Dundee. This is a pivotal role for an experienced surgeon committed to delivering outstanding patient care, contributing to the development of surgical services, and fostering a culture of excellence. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing expert surgical consultation, performing a range of complex procedures, and participating in the on-call rota. You will be instrumental in teaching and mentoring junior medical staff and engaging in clinical governance and service improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert surgical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for patients.
- Perform complex surgical procedures across a specified surgical sub-specialty (e.g., General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology).
- Lead and participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Supervise, teach, and mentor junior medical staff and surgical trainees.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Actively participate in clinical audit, governance, and quality improvement projects.
- Participate in the consultant on-call rota as required.
- Maintain accurate and timely patient records.
- Engage in continuous professional development and revalidation activities.
Required Skills
- Full GMC registration with a license to practice.
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligible for inclusion within 6 months of interview).
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (or equivalent).
- Extensive experience in a relevant surgical sub-specialty at consultant level.
- Demonstrated ability to perform complex surgical procedures independently.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
- Commitment to patient safety and quality improvement.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Higher degree (e.g., MD, PhD) in a relevant field.
- Experience in clinical research or academic publication.
- Formal training in medical education or leadership.
- Special interest complementing existing departmental strengths.
