Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Health Physics Specialist to join our team in Preston, UK. This is a critical role focused on ensuring the highest standards of radiation safety within our projects, particularly in the nuclear and environmental sectors. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing radiation protection programs, conducting surveys, assessing dose, and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive radiation protection programs and procedures.
- Perform radiation surveys, contamination monitoring, and dose assessments to ensure worker and public safety.
- Interpret and apply national and international radiation protection regulations and standards.
- Provide expert advice on health physics matters to project teams, management, and clients.
- Conduct radiological risk assessments and develop appropriate control measures.
- Prepare detailed reports and documentation for regulatory bodies and internal stakeholders.
- Respond to radiological incidents and emergencies, providing technical guidance and support.
- Deliver radiation safety training to personnel at all levels.
- Participate in design reviews to ensure ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles are integrated.
- Calibrate and maintain radiation detection instrumentation.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or a related scientific discipline.
- Proven experience in operational health physics, preferably within the nuclear industry or a similar highly regulated environment.
- Strong understanding of radiation physics, dosimetry, and radiation detection principles.
- Familiarity with UK radiation protection regulations (e.g., IRR17) and international standards.
- Proficiency in performing radiological surveys and interpreting results.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Health Physics or a related field.
- Certification as a Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) or eligibility for certification.
- Experience with radioactive waste management and decommissioning projects.
- Proficiency with specialized health physics software and modeling tools.
- Experience in an environment requiring visa sponsorship and understanding of the process.
