Job Description
Are you passionate about food and eager to learn the art of cheese? H-E-B is seeking an enthusiastic Artisan Cheesemonger Trainee to join our specialty foods team in McAllen. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals with no prior experience in cheesemongering, offering comprehensive training in cheese selection, handling, affinage (the aging process), and retail sales. You will work directly with our experienced team to develop expertise in a wide array of domestic and international cheeses, provide exceptional customer service, and help create memorable culinary experiences for our customers. Key Responsibilities
- Participate in extensive training programs covering cheese varieties, origins, tasting notes, and proper storage techniques.
- Learn and assist with the cutting, wrapping, and merchandising of various cheeses to maintain presentation standards.
- Develop expertise in food safety and sanitation practices specific to specialty food handling.
- Engage with customers, providing knowledgeable recommendations and guiding them through the cheese selection process.
- Assist with inventory management, stock rotation, and order placement for cheese products.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the cheese counter and surrounding areas.
- Contribute to a positive team environment and uphold H-E-B's standards of service excellence.
Required Skills
- A genuine passion for food, especially cheese, and a strong desire to learn.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a customer-focused approach.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced retail environment, including weekends and holidays.
- Strong work ethic and reliability.
- Ability to lift and move up to 30 lbs and stand for extended periods.
- No prior experience in cheesemongering required; full training provided.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a customer service or retail setting.
- Basic knowledge of different food pairings (e.g., wine, charcuterie).
- High school diploma or equivalent.
