Job Description
Join the City of Irvine Parks & Recreation team as a City Arborist Assistant / Tree Surgeon Trainee! This is an exceptional entry-level opportunity for individuals passionate about the outdoors and eager to learn the vital skills of urban tree care and arboriculture. No prior experience is required, as comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided by our experienced arborists and crew leaders. You will work alongside our dedicated team, contributing to the health and beauty of Irvine’s urban forest, learning everything from pruning techniques to safe equipment operation and tree health assessment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist certified arborists and tree surgeons with various tree care operations.
- Learn and practice safe climbing techniques and aerial lift operation under supervision.
- Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and specialized arboricultural equipment safely.
- Perform ground crew duties, including dragging brush, chipping, and site cleanup.
- Assist with planting, pruning, and removal of trees within city parks, streets, and public spaces.
- Learn to identify common tree diseases, pests, and structural issues.
- Follow all safety protocols and guidelines, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Contribute to a positive and safe working environment.
- Engage in continuous learning and skill development in arboriculture.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid California Driver's License or ability to obtain one prior to employment.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic and a desire to learn new skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Commitment to safety and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of plants or trees.
- Experience with manual labor or outdoor work.
- First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Bilingual in Spanish or other languages spoken in the community.
