Job Description

Westmorland and Furness Council is seeking an enthusiastic City Arborist Assistant / Tree Surgeon Trainee to join our vital team in Barrow-in-Furness. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals eager to start a career in arboriculture. You will receive comprehensive, hands-on training from experienced arborists, learning all aspects of tree care, maintenance, and safety. No prior experience is required; we are looking for dedication, a strong work ethic, and a genuine interest in working with trees.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist qualified arborists and tree surgeons with various tree work operations.
- Learn and apply safe working practices, including proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.
- Help with tree planting, pruning, felling, and stump grinding under supervision.
- Participate in emergency tree work and storm damage response.
- Support ground operations, including clearing debris, chipping brush, and site clean-up.
- Undertake basic equipment checks and maintenance.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations and environmental policies.
- Contribute to the overall upkeep and improvement of green spaces within Barrow-in-Furness.
Required Skills
- Eagerness to learn and develop skills in arboriculture.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Good physical fitness and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- A strong commitment to health and safety.
- Valid UK driving license or willingness to obtain one.
