Job Description
Are you passionate about animals and eager to make a real difference in their lives? Lismore City Council is seeking a dedicated and caring Animal Shelter Hand to join our team. This entry-level position is perfect for someone who loves working with pets and is committed to providing a safe, clean, and nurturing environment for animals awaiting their forever homes. You will be instrumental in the daily care and well-being of a variety of animals, from dogs and cats to smaller domestic animals, ensuring they receive the attention and comfort they deserve. Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily cleaning and sanitisation of animal enclosures, common areas, and facilities.
- Prepare and distribute appropriate food and fresh water to all animals.
- Monitor animal health, behaviour, and temperament, reporting any concerns to senior staff or veterinary personnel.
- Provide exercise, enrichment, and socialisation for animals, including walking dogs and interacting with cats.
- Assist with the intake and release of animals, including record-keeping and basic administrative tasks.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of animal care, feeding, and medical treatments.
- Assist visitors with inquiries, animal viewings, and adoption processes in a friendly and helpful manner.
- Support veterinary staff with animal restraint and basic medical procedures as required.
- Ensure compliance with all animal welfare standards and council policies.
Required Skills
- A genuine love for animals and a compassionate approach to their care.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
- Strong work ethic and reliability, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to learn and adhere to animal welfare guidelines and safety protocols.
- Ability to maintain a clean and organised work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience (paid or volunteer) in an animal care setting (e.g., shelter, vet clinic, boarding kennel).
- Basic knowledge of animal behaviour and common animal health issues.
- Current First Aid certification.
- A valid Australian Driver's License.
