Job Description

Join the dynamic culinary team at Island Health as a Dietary / Meal Prep Kitchen Assistant. This role is crucial in ensuring that our patients and residents receive nutritious, appealing, and carefully prepared meals tailored to their dietary needs. Working exclusively during daytime hours, you will assist our chefs and dietitians in all aspects of meal production, from ingredient preparation to plating and service, all while maintaining the highest standards of food safety and hygiene. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of ingredients for meals, including washing, chopping, and measuring.
  • Portion and plate meals according to specific dietary requirements and portion control guidelines.
  • Ensure food items are stored correctly, rotated efficiently, and maintain proper temperature controls.
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, workstations, and dining areas in accordance with health and safety regulations.
  • Support the culinary team with general kitchen duties, including dishwashing and waste management.
  • Adhere to all food safety protocols, hygiene standards, and facility policies.
  • Collaborate with dietitians and other staff to ensure patient satisfaction and special requests are met.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a kitchen or food service environment (e.g., restaurant, cafeteria, healthcare).
  • Food Handler's Certificate or willingness to obtain one.
  • Knowledge of common dietary restrictions (e.g., gluten-free, low-sodium, diabetic).
