Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and energetic Dietary / Meal Prep Kitchen Assistant to join our food services team at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s in Grand Rapids. This vital role supports our mission by ensuring patients, staff, and visitors receive nutritious and delicious meals prepared with care. You will be instrumental in meal assembly, food preparation, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and adhering to strict dietary guidelines. Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the preparation and assembly of patient and cafeteria meals according to established menus, recipes, and dietary restrictions.
- Portion food items accurately and attractively for individual trays and serving lines.
- Transport food carts to and from patient units in a timely and safe manner.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including washing dishes, sanitizing workstations, and sweeping/mopping floors.
- Monitor food temperatures and ensure proper storage of ingredients.
- Adhere to all food safety and sanitation guidelines (HAACP, local health codes).
- Assist with inventory management, including receiving, storing, and rotating food supplies.
- Operate kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.
- Communicate effectively with culinary staff, dietitians, and patient care teams.
- Provide excellent customer service to patients, visitors, and staff.
Required Skills
- Ability to read and follow recipes and dietary instructions accurately.
- Basic understanding of food safety and sanitation principles.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Good verbal communication skills.
- Physical stamina to stand for extended periods, lift up to 25 pounds, and push/pull food carts.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Previous experience in a kitchen, food service, or healthcare setting.
- Current Food Handler's Permit/Certificate.
