Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Environmental Health Officer with a strong focus on Council Compliance to join our dynamic team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for upholding public health and environmental standards across the municipality. This involves conducting inspections, investigating complaints, enforcing relevant legislation, and providing expert advice to businesses and residents on a wide range of environmental health matters. You will work closely with community members and local businesses to ensure adherence to health and safety regulations, contributing to a healthier and safer Launceston.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting routine inspections of food businesses, public swimming pools, cooling towers, and other regulated premises to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and standards.
  • Investigating complaints relating to public health nuisances, environmental pollution, food safety breaches, and other environmental health matters.
  • Enforcing environmental health legislation, including issuing notices, orders, and prosecuting where necessary, in accordance with Council policies and procedures.
  • Providing expert advice and education to businesses, residents, and community groups on best practices for environmental health and risk management.
  • Assessing development applications and providing environmental health input to planning processes.
  • Preparing reports, maintaining accurate records, and contributing to the development and review of Council policies and procedures related to environmental health.
  • Responding to public health emergencies and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders during incident management.
  • Participating in educational campaigns and community engagement initiatives to promote public health awareness.

Required Skills

  • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Health or a related scientific discipline.
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant environmental health legislation, regulations, and standards (e.g., Food Act, Public Health Act, Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act).
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply complex legislation effectively.
  • Strong investigative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in using IT systems for record-keeping and report generation.
  • Current Tasmanian Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as an Environmental Health Officer in a local government setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in food safety auditing or specific environmental health specialisations.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in public health or environmental science.
  • Membership with Environmental Health Australia (EHA).
