Job Description

GHD is seeking a passionate and driven Environmental Science Student to join our Cairns team for a paid internship focusing on field research and sampling. This is an unparalleled opportunity for a student eager to gain practical, hands-on experience in environmental consulting, working on critical projects within the unique ecosystems of Far North Queensland. You will work alongside experienced environmental scientists and engineers, contributing to real-world projects, developing essential field skills, and learning about environmental monitoring, data collection, and analysis. This role is ideal for individuals looking to apply their academic knowledge in a professional setting and kickstart their career in environmental science. Full training and mentorship will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior environmental scientists with field data collection, including water quality sampling, soil sampling, and ecological surveys.
  • Prepare and maintain field equipment, ensuring calibration and proper functioning.
  • Accurately record field observations and data according to established protocols.
  • Support laboratory sample preparation and chain-of-custody procedures.
  • Conduct basic data entry and assist with preliminary data analysis.
  • Adhere strictly to health, safety, and environmental guidelines in all field and office activities.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to project discussions.
  • Perform other administrative and technical tasks as required to support project delivery.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Marine Science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong academic record and a genuine passion for environmental conservation and field work.
  • Eagerness to learn and develop practical environmental consulting skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently with supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work in varying outdoor conditions, including remote locations.
  • Valid Australian driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior academic project experience involving field data collection or laboratory work.
  • Knowledge of Far North Queensland ecosystems or environmental regulations.
  • First Aid and/or CPR certification.
  • Boat license or experience with small vessels.
  • Understanding of GIS software or data management principles.
