Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Fisheries Patrol Assistant to join our team in Toowoomba. This role is crucial for supporting the protection and management of Queensland’s valuable fisheries resources. You will assist Fisheries Officers in surveillance, compliance, and enforcement activities, playing a direct role in safeguarding our aquatic environments. This is an on-site position requiring a strong commitment to public service and environmental stewardship.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Fisheries Officers in conducting patrols of fishing grounds, waterways, and marine protected areas.
- Support the inspection of vessels, fishing gear, and catch to ensure compliance with fisheries legislation.
- Collect data and maintain accurate records of patrol activities and inspections.
- Participate in educational and community engagement initiatives to promote responsible fishing practices.
- Provide administrative support for compliance operations as required.
- Assist with the investigation of suspected breaches of fisheries regulations.
- Maintain and care for equipment and vehicles used in patrol operations.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and departmental procedures.
Required Skills
- Valid Australian Driver's License
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good physical fitness and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite)
- Commitment to environmental protection and regulatory compliance
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a regulatory, enforcement, or environmental field
- Knowledge of Queensland fisheries legislation and regulations
- Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal or similar marine qualification
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Experience with data collection and reporting systems
