Job Description
Join Maple Leaf Foods as a Food Science & Nutrition Intern, focusing on Product Development. This is an unparalleled opportunity for an aspiring food scientist or nutritionist to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic research and development environment. You will support our R&D team in the innovation and optimization of food products, from concept to commercialization. This role is designed for individuals eager to apply academic knowledge in a practical setting, learn industry best practices, and contribute to developing delicious and nutritious food options. You will work closely with experienced professionals, participate in various stages of product development, and gain valuable insights into the food industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the formulation and development of new food products and product improvements under supervision.
- Prepare and execute pilot plant trials and laboratory experiments.
- Conduct ingredient research and evaluate raw material functionality.
- Perform basic analytical testing and sensory evaluation of product prototypes.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of experimental procedures, data, and results.
- Support the R&D team in preparing samples for internal and external presentations.
- Ensure compliance with food safety and quality standards in all R&D activities.
- Contribute to general lab maintenance, organization, and inventory management.
- Participate in team meetings and present findings as required.
- Learn and apply food safety principles and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Food Science, Nutrition, Food Technology, or a related scientific field.
- Basic understanding of food chemistry, microbiology, and processing principles.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Demonstrated eagerness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and standard operating procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous academic or personal project experience related to food product development or sensory evaluation.
- Familiarity with lab safety protocols and basic laboratory equipment.
- Availability for a full-time internship for a minimum of 4-8 months.
