Job Description

Maison Birks is seeking a skilled and passionate Gemologist / Diamond Grader to join our esteemed team in Montreal. This unique opportunity includes international sponsorship for qualified candidates looking to build a career in Canada. As a Gemologist / Diamond Grader, you will be responsible for meticulously assessing and grading diamonds and other precious gemstones, ensuring their quality and authenticity align with Birks’ rigorous standards. You will play a crucial role in maintaining our reputation for excellence, contributing to our procurement, inventory, and sales processes. We are looking for an individual with a keen eye for detail, a deep understanding of gemological principles, and a commitment to precision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed grading and certification of diamonds according to GIA 4Cs (Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat Weight) and other industry standards.
  • Identify and evaluate various precious and semi-precious gemstones, including origin, treatment, and quality.
  • Operate and maintain gemological equipment, such as microscopes, refractometers, polariscopes, and spectroscopes.
  • Document and log all grading results accurately and meticulously.
  • Collaborate with procurement, inventory, and sales teams to provide expert gemological insights.
  • Ensure compliance with all ethical sourcing guidelines and industry best practices.
  • Conduct research on new gemological developments and market trends.
  • Assist in training and mentoring junior staff on gemological principles and grading techniques.
  • Maintain a secure and organized work environment for valuable inventory.

Required Skills

  • Proven expertise in diamond grading and gemstone identification.
  • Thorough knowledge of gemological instruments and their application.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and precision.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Proficiency in inventory management software and basic computer applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate Gemologist (GG) diploma from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or equivalent certification.
  • 2+ years of professional experience in diamond grading, gem identification, or a related field within the jewelry industry.
  • Knowledge of French is an asset.
  • Experience with international grading standards and markets.
