Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Government Women & Children’s Shelter Assistant to join our team in a secure shelter environment. This crucial role involves providing direct support to women and children seeking refuge, ensuring their safety and well-being, and assisting with the smooth operation of the shelter. You will work within established protocols to create a supportive, confidential, and empowering atmosphere for residents. This is a secure role, requiring discretion and a strong commitment to safeguarding.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct practical and emotional support to residents, including women and children, adhering to confidentiality and safeguarding policies.
- Assist with the daily operations of the shelter, including managing communal areas, coordinating activities, and supporting residents with their routines.
- Ensure the safety and security of the shelter premises and its residents, following all established security procedures.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records and reports related to resident welfare and shelter operations.
- Liaise effectively with internal teams and external agencies (e.g., social services, police, healthcare providers) as required, under supervision.
- Support residents in accessing essential services and resources.
- Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Adhere to all council policies and procedures, particularly those related to safeguarding, data protection, and health and safety.
Required Skills
- Demonstrable empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental approach to supporting vulnerable individuals.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport.
- A clear understanding of safeguarding principles and child protection procedures.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently, using initiative when appropriate.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail for record-keeping.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Ability to undergo and pass an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a support worker role, particularly within a shelter, residential care, or social care setting.
- A relevant qualification in Health and Social Care, Childcare, or a related field.
- Knowledge of local support services and resources available to vulnerable women and children.
- First Aid certification.
