Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Grounds Maintenance Worker / Trainee Gardener to join our dedicated Facilities Management team. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about outdoor work and eager to learn the fundamentals of groundskeeping and horticulture. No prior experience is required as comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided. You will play a vital role in maintaining the beauty and functionality of the University’s outdoor areas, ensuring a pleasant and safe campus environment. This role involves physical outdoor work in various weather conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general groundskeeping tasks including mowing, weeding, edging, and mulching lawns and garden beds.
  • Assist with planting, pruning, and watering trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Operate and maintain various grounds equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, and hand tools.
  • Participate in seasonal clean-up efforts, including leaf removal and storm debris clearing.
  • Help maintain irrigation systems and ensure proper watering schedules.
  • Identify and report any issues related to plant health, pest infestations, or equipment malfunctions.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and procedures while performing duties.
  • Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment.

Required Skills

  • Ability to perform physical outdoor work, including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
  • Willingness to learn and take direction.
  • Strong work ethic and reliability.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (preferred, but not always required for entry-level positions if on-site travel is minimal).

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Basic understanding of plants or previous outdoor work experience (e.g., personal gardening, farm work, etc.) is a plus but not required.
