Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated Historic Monument Caretaker for a quiet public sector role within the City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department. This unique position offers the opportunity to work independently, focusing on the careful maintenance and preservation of Santa Barbara’s historic monuments and sites. The ideal candidate will possess a keen eye for detail, a commitment to historical preservation, and a desire to contribute to the community in a meaningful, hands-on capacity. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular inspections of assigned historic monuments and sites for cleanliness, damage, or wear.
- Perform light cleaning tasks, including dusting, sweeping, and removal of debris from monument areas.
- Execute minor repairs and routine maintenance to preserve the integrity and appearance of monuments.
- Identify and report any significant damage, vandalism, or deterioration to supervisory staff.
- Maintain surrounding landscaping, including light gardening, weeding, and ensuring clear pathways.
- Keep accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and material usage.
- Ensure public areas around monuments are tidy, safe, and welcoming for visitors.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and city guidelines for historical preservation.
Required Skills
- Proven ability to perform basic maintenance and light repair tasks.
- Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to work.
- Capability to work independently and manage time effectively without direct supervision.
- Physical stamina to perform duties involving walking, standing, bending, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
- Excellent observational skills for identifying potential issues.
- Valid California Driver's License and a clean driving record.
- Basic computer literacy for record-keeping and communication.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of experience in groundskeeping, maintenance, or facilities care.
- Knowledge of historical preservation principles or an interest in local history.
- Experience with basic landscaping and horticulture tasks.
- Certification in First Aid and CPR.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff and, occasionally, the public.
