Job Description
Are you passionate about marine life and eager to contribute to vital coastal conservation efforts? Conservation Volunteers Australia is offering an exciting Marine Biology Internship focusing on the pristine coastal ecosystems around Nhulunbuy, Northern Territory. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals looking to gain hands-on experience in marine conservation, data collection, and community engagement. You will work alongside experienced marine scientists and conservationists, learning practical field techniques and contributing directly to projects designed to protect our precious marine environments. Full training will be provided, making this an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates with little to no prior professional experience in the field.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in marine flora and fauna surveys, including intertidal zone and seagrass bed assessments.
- Participate in coastal clean-up initiatives and marine debris data collection.
- Support monitoring activities for coastal erosion and habitat health.
- Contribute to data entry and basic analysis under direct supervision.
- Help prepare and maintain equipment for field expeditions.
- Engage with local communities and stakeholders on conservation awareness programs.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and environmental guidelines during fieldwork.
Required Skills
- Strong interest in marine biology, environmental science, or conservation.
- Enthusiasm for fieldwork, often in challenging outdoor conditions (e.g., heat, humidity, uneven terrain).
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a diverse team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to various tasks and environments.
- Basic computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Conservation, or a closely related field.
- Basic understanding of coastal ecosystems or marine species specific to Northern Australia.
- Prior experience with outdoor activities or fieldwork, such as hiking, camping, or snorkeling.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain prior to commencement).
- Valid Australian driver's license.
