Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Medical Social Work Intern to join our Patient Advocacy team in Phoenix. This internship offers an invaluable opportunity for aspiring social workers to gain practical experience in a dynamic healthcare environment. You will work alongside experienced professionals, advocating for patients, assisting with discharge planning, connecting patients to community resources, and providing emotional support. This is an entry-level position designed for students or recent graduates eager to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world setting, with full training provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist medical social workers with patient assessments and care planning.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient needs and progress.
- Help patients and families navigate complex healthcare systems and understand their rights.
- Research and connect patients with appropriate community resources for ongoing support post-discharge.
- Provide emotional support and crisis intervention under direct supervision.
- Document patient interactions and contribute to case management notes.
- Learn about ethical considerations and best practices in medical social work and patient advocacy.
- Contribute to departmental projects aimed at improving patient experience and outcomes.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's or Master's program in Social Work (BSW/MSW) or related field.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated empathy, compassion, and a non-judgmental approach.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional ethics.
- Basic computer proficiency.
- Eagerness to learn and a proactive attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer experience in a healthcare or social service setting.
- Knowledge of local community resources in the Phoenix area.
- Bilingual abilities (especially Spanish) are a plus.
