Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Ophthalmologist to join our comprehensive and dynamic Eye Care Department at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in providing expert diagnostic, medical, and surgical care for a wide range of ocular conditions. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to a busy, progressive department, working alongside a multidisciplinary team to deliver outstanding patient outcomes. You will manage complex cases, participate in on-call rotations, and contribute to the training and development of junior medical staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive ophthalmological consultation and surgical services to patients.
- Diagnose and treat a wide variety of eye diseases and conditions, including cataracts, glaucoma, retinal disorders, and corneal diseases.
- Perform complex ophthalmic surgeries, including cataract extractions, glaucoma procedures, and other anterior and posterior segment surgeries.
- Participate in regular outpatient clinics, inpatient rounds, and emergency on-call rotas.
- Collaborate effectively with optometrists, nurses, technicians, and other healthcare professionals.
- Maintain accurate and timely patient records in accordance with hospital policies and medical best practices.
- Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives within the department.
- Supervise and mentor junior medical staff, including registrars and residents.
- Engage in continuous professional development and stay abreast of advancements in ophthalmology.
Required Skills
- Full GMC registration with a Licence to Practise.
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology or eligibility for inclusion within six months of interview.
- FRCOphth or equivalent specialist qualification.
- Extensive experience in general ophthalmology and subspecialty interests relevant to the department's needs.
- Demonstrated ability to perform a wide range of ophthalmic surgical procedures independently.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to patient-centred care and continuous quality improvement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Subspecialty fellowship training in a relevant area (e.g., Glaucoma, Retina, Cornea).
- Experience in medical education or teaching.
- Participation in clinical research or audit.
