Job Description
Are you passionate about technology and eager to kick-start a career in an essential public utility? San Jose Water Company is seeking enthusiastic individuals for a Public Utilities Drone Pilot Trainee position. This entry-level role offers comprehensive training in drone operation, aerial surveying techniques, and data analysis specifically for utilities infrastructure inspection. No prior drone piloting experience is required; we provide all the necessary training, including preparation for FAA Part 107 certification. You will learn to utilize advanced drone technology to enhance the safety, efficiency, and reliability of our water infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in a structured training program to learn drone operation, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance (including FAA Part 107).
- Assist experienced pilots and field teams in planning and executing drone missions for aerial surveying and inspection of water pipelines, reservoirs, and other infrastructure.
- Learn to operate drones safely and efficiently in various environmental conditions.
- Collect, process, and analyze aerial imagery and data to identify potential issues or areas for maintenance.
- Maintain drone equipment, batteries, and accessories, ensuring they are in optimal working condition.
- Document flight logs, maintenance records, and inspection findings accurately.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to support project goals.
- Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures.
- Continuously learn about new drone technologies and applications in the utilities sector.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid California Driver's License and a clean driving record.
- Strong aptitude for learning new technologies and technical concepts.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions.
- Basic computer proficiency.
- Strong work ethic and a proactive, team-oriented attitude.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and traverse uneven terrain.
- Commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
- No prior drone experience required – full training will be provided.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree or coursework in a related technical field (e.g., aviation, engineering, GIS, surveying).
- Demonstrated interest in aviation, remote sensing, or environmental technology.
- Basic understanding of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) concepts.
- Prior experience with fieldwork or working in an outdoor environment.
