Job Description
Dive into the exciting world of game development as a Trading Card Game (TCG) Design Intern at Nexus Games Canada. This on-site internship in Barrie offers an unparalleled opportunity for aspiring designers to gain hands-on experience in crafting compelling and innovative trading card games. You will work closely with our experienced design team, learning the intricacies of TCG mechanics, balance, and player experience from concept to implementation. No prior professional experience is required; we are dedicated to providing comprehensive training and mentorship to kickstart your career.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior game designers in the development of new card mechanics, abilities, and expansion sets.
- Contribute to brainstorming sessions for new TCG concepts, themes, and game features.
- Participate actively in playtesting sessions, providing constructive feedback and helping to identify balance issues and design flaws.
- Conduct research on current TCG market trends, competitor games, and player communities to inform design decisions.
- Support the design team with various documentation tasks, including rulesets, card text, flavor text, and design guidelines.
- Learn about the full lifecycle of TCG development, from initial concept through to polishing and potential launch.
Required Skills
- A strong passion for Trading Card Games (TCGs) and familiarity with various popular titles (e.g., Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon).
- Basic understanding of fundamental game design principles, such as balance, pacing, and player psychology.
- Exceptional creativity, imagination, and a knack for innovative thinking.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate design ideas clearly.
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively within a team environment.
- Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Google Docs, Microsoft Office Suite).
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a post-secondary program related to Game Design, Creative Writing, Interactive Media, Arts, or a similar field.
- Personal experience creating custom card sets, fan-made expansions, or modifications for existing TCGs.
- A portfolio showcasing creative projects, writing samples, or personal game designs (even if non-professional).
