Job Description

We are seeking a highly meticulous and detail-oriented Virtual Proofreader to join our team, specializing in self-published books. This 100% remote contract position offers the flexibility to work from anywhere while contributing to the quality and professionalism of diverse literary works. As a Virtual Proofreader, you will be responsible for the final review of manuscripts, identifying and correcting grammatical errors, punctuation mistakes, spelling inconsistencies, and formatting issues to ensure a polished and error-free reading experience for authors and their audiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough proofreads of self-published manuscripts across various genres.
  • Identify and correct errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and word usage.
  • Ensure consistency in style, capitalization, hyphenation, and numerical formatting.
  • Verify adherence to specified style guides (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style) or client preferences.
  • Flag any potential factual inaccuracies or areas requiring author clarification.
  • Provide clear, concise, and constructive feedback using standard proofreading marks or digital annotation tools.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional command of the English language, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Proven ability to maintain extreme attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word (Track Changes, Comments) and Google Docs.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent time management and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with standard proofreading symbols and practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in proofreading or editing, particularly with self-published authors or diverse content.
  • Knowledge of common style guides such as The Chicago Manual of Style or AP Stylebook.
  • Experience with different book genres and manuscript types.
  • A passion for reading and supporting independent authors.
