Job Description
We are seeking a visionary and experienced Library Director / Head Archivist to lead our comprehensive library and archival services. This pivotal role involves overseeing all aspects of the library’s operations, managing our valuable archival collections, and guiding our strategic direction. The successful candidate will be responsible for preserving historical records, expanding digital access, and ensuring the library remains a vital resource for research and community engagement. This leadership position requires a deep commitment to public service, strong administrative capabilities, and a passion for information science. Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and management for all library and archival operations, including collection development, cataloging, public services, and digital initiatives.
- Oversee the preservation, organization, and accessibility of historical documents, rare books, photographs, and other archival materials.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for the library and archives, ensuring compliance with professional standards and best practices.
- Manage the departmental budget, allocate resources effectively, and seek grant funding opportunities to support library and archival projects.
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate library and archival staff, fostering a collaborative and professional work environment.
- Collaborate with community organizations, educational institutions, and stakeholders to enhance library programs and services.
- Lead initiatives for digital preservation, digitization projects, and online access to collections.
- Represent the library and archives at professional conferences, community events, and in relevant professional organizations.
- Ensure the physical security and environmental stability of collections.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) or Archival Studies from an ALA-accredited program, or equivalent international qualification.
- Minimum of 6 years (72 months) of progressive leadership experience in library or archival management.
- Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, budget management, and staff supervision.
- Strong knowledge of archival principles, preservation techniques, and current trends in information technology.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Proficiency with integrated library systems (ILS) and archival management software.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and foster an inclusive environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional advanced degree (e.g., Ph.D.) in a related field.
- Experience with grant writing and fundraising.
- Familiarity with Pacific Northwest history and regional archival collections.
- Proficiency in a second language.
- Experience in designing and implementing digital humanities projects.
