Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Geography & GIS Mapping Intern to join our team in Gulfport, MS. This internship offers an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates eager to gain hands-on experience in geographic information systems (GIS) and contribute to impactful projects. Under the guidance of experienced GIS professionals and project managers, you will assist with data collection, mapping, analysis, and visualization tasks. This role is designed to provide practical experience and a foundational understanding of GIS applications within a professional consulting environment, with full training provided for all necessary tools and processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the collection, entry, and maintenance of geographic data.
- Support the creation and update of GIS maps, layers, and databases.
- Perform basic spatial analysis under supervision to support project needs.
- Help prepare GIS-related reports, presentations, and documentation.
- Collaborate with project teams to understand mapping requirements and deliver accurate GIS products.
- Participate in field data collection activities, if applicable and safe.
- Learn and apply best practices for data quality assurance and quality control.
Required Skills
- Strong interest in geography, spatial analysis, and mapping technologies.
- Proficiency with basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Willingness to learn new software and technical concepts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- Familiarity with GIS software such as ArcGIS Desktop/Pro or QGIS is a plus.
- Basic understanding of spatial data formats and coordinate systems.
- Previous coursework or projects involving GIS concepts.
