Job Description

Join the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) as a Survey Officer and play a crucial role in collecting vital data that shapes Australia’s future. You will be responsible for conducting interviews and collecting information from households and businesses across Palmerston and surrounding areas. Full training will be provided to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in this rewarding field research role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct face-to-face interviews with selected households and businesses using an ABS-issued tablet.
  • Accurately record survey responses and ensure data quality and integrity.
  • Explain the purpose and importance of ABS surveys to respondents in a clear and professional manner.
  • Manage your allocated workload and schedule interviews efficiently to meet deadlines.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and security of all collected information.
  • Liaise with the ABS field support team for guidance and problem-solving.
  • Adhere to all ABS policies, procedures, and ethical guidelines.

Required Skills

  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build rapport with diverse individuals from various backgrounds.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data collection.
  • Basic computer literacy, including tablet operation.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
  • Reliability and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Valid Australian Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle (reimbursement for work-related travel will be provided).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in customer service, community engagement, or similar client-facing roles.
  • Familiarity with the Palmerston and Northern Territory region.
  • Ability to speak a language other than English (desirable, but not essential).
