Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and proactive School Grounds Caretaker to join our team, responsible for the general maintenance, repair, and upkeep of school grounds and facilities in Newcastle upon Tyne. This vital role ensures a safe, clean, and functional environment for students, staff, and visitors. The successful candidate will be hands-on, resourceful, and committed to maintaining high standards across the school premises, encompassing both internal and external areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine checks and maintenance of school grounds, including gardening, litter picking, and general tidiness.
  • Undertake minor repairs and maintenance tasks within the school building, such as plumbing, electrical checks (where qualified), carpentry, and painting.
  • Ensure the security of the premises, including locking/unlocking gates and buildings, and responding to alarm calls as required.
  • Manage waste disposal and recycling effectively, ensuring adherence to environmental guidelines.
  • Oversee and liaise with external contractors for specialized repairs or services.
  • Conduct health and safety checks, identify and report potential hazards, and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and supply inventory.
  • Assist with setting up and clearing away for school events and activities.
  • Respond promptly to urgent maintenance requests and emergencies.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in general maintenance, caretaking, or groundskeeping roles.
  • Demonstrable practical skills in basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, and general repairs.
  • Understanding of health and safety procedures relevant to school environments.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A strong commitment to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.
  • Valid UK driving license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in a relevant trade (e.g., plumbing, carpentry, building maintenance).
  • First Aid qualification.
  • Experience working within an educational setting.
