Job Description

Pets at Home in Hemel Hempstead is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Aquarium & Exotic Pet Store Assistant to join our vibrant team. In this exciting role, you will be crucial in ensuring the well-being of our diverse range of fish, reptiles, and small animals, while also providing exceptional service to our customers. You’ll gain hands-on experience in animal husbandry, retail operations, and customer engagement, contributing to a thriving pet-friendly environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide daily care and maintenance for all aquatic life and exotic pets, including feeding, cleaning enclosures, and monitoring health.
- Assist customers with enquiries, offering expert advice on pet care, product selection, and responsible pet ownership, particularly for aquatic and exotic animals.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene across the aquarium and exotic pet sections, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for animals and customers.
- Process sales transactions, handle cash, and manage inventory for pet products and supplies.
- Contribute to merchandising efforts, ensuring displays are attractive, well-stocked, and comply with company standards.
- Handle new animal arrivals, ensuring proper acclimatization and record-keeping.
- Work collaboratively with team members to achieve store goals and deliver an outstanding customer experience.
Required Skills
- A genuine passion for animals, particularly aquatic and exotic species.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a friendly and approachable demeanor.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced retail environment, including weekends and holidays.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and animal welfare.
- Reliable, punctual, and a proactive team player.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a retail or customer service role.
- Basic knowledge of aquarium maintenance, fish species, or exotic pet care (e.g., reptiles, small mammals).
- Experience with merchandising or stock management.
- NVQ Level 2 in Animal Care or equivalent qualification (or working towards).
