Job Description

Allen & Unwin is seeking a dedicated and experienced Bookbinding Lead to spearhead our new specialty publishing bindery in Coffs Harbour. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of artisanal book production within a renowned publishing house. The Bookbinding Lead will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of our specialty binding operations, from initial design and material selection to the final, exquisite product. You will lead a small team, ensuring the highest standards of craftsmanship, efficiency, and safety. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee all specialty bookbinding projects from inception to completion.
  • Lead, train, and mentor a small team of bookbinders and assistants.
  • Select and procure high-quality materials, including papers, leathers, fabrics, and adhesives.
  • Operate and maintain specialized bookbinding equipment and tools.
  • Implement quality control procedures to ensure flawless execution of binding techniques.
  • Develop and refine new binding methods and finishes for unique projects.
  • Collaborate with editorial and design teams to translate artistic vision into physical books.
  • Ensure a safe and organized workshop environment.
  • Manage production schedules and project timelines effectively.

Required Skills

  • Proven expertise in various traditional and modern bookbinding techniques (e.g., case binding, perfect binding, Japanese binding, leather binding).
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality craftsmanship.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining bookbinding machinery and hand tools.
  • Knowledge of different bookbinding materials and their properties.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot production challenges.
  • Ability to read and interpret design specifications.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in a professional bookbinding or print finishing role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal qualification in bookbinding, printmaking, or a related craft discipline.
  • Experience with specialty finishes such as foil stamping, debossing, or gilding.
  • Portfolio showcasing diverse bookbinding projects.
  • Experience in a publishing house environment.
  • Strong understanding of design principles as they apply to book aesthetics.
