Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and calm individual to join our critical response team as a Fire Communications Officer. This immediate hire position is based in our state-of-the-art control room in Altrincham. You will be at the heart of emergency operations, responsible for receiving emergency calls, assessing situations, and dispatching fire crews and resources accurately and efficiently. This role demands exceptional communication skills, the ability to make rapid decisions under pressure, and a compassionate approach to callers in distress. Full training will be provided to equip you with the specific skills required for this essential service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive and accurately log emergency and non-emergency calls from the public and partner agencies.
  • Quickly assess the nature and severity of incidents to determine appropriate resource allocation.
  • Dispatch fire appliances and specialist teams using computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems.
  • Provide clear, concise, and critical information to responding crews.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with incident commanders and crews, tracking their status.
  • Record all incident details accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Liaise with other emergency services and public utility providers as required.
  • Adhere strictly to operational procedures and protocols, especially during major incidents.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development to enhance skills and knowledge.

Required Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a clear and articulate telephone manner.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure in fast-paced, high-stress situations.
  • Strong active listening skills and the ability to extract critical information quickly.
  • Proficient in basic computer use and data entry, with the ability to learn new systems rapidly.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions swiftly and accurately.
  • Empathy and compassion towards individuals in distress.
  • Flexibility to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in an emergency services control room, contact centre, or customer service environment.
  • Familiarity with Greater Manchester geography and road networks.
  • Knowledge of emergency services protocols and procedures.
