Job Description

As a Legal Researcher Intern with a Judicial Support Focus, you will gain invaluable practical experience supporting our legal team and contributing directly to the judicial process. This role is specifically designed for ambitious law students or recent graduates eager to apply their academic legal knowledge in a real-world setting, with a particular emphasis on research that directly aids judicial decision-making and comprehensive case preparation. You will work closely alongside experienced legal professionals, developing critical research, analytical, and administrative skills essential for a successful career in law. Full training and mentorship will be provided, making this an ideal entry point for individuals with limited prior professional experience but a strong academic foundation and a profound passion for justice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive legal research on specific cases, statutes, regulations, and precedents relevant to ongoing matters.
  • Assist in drafting legal memoranda, summaries, and reports, ensuring accuracy and clarity for judicial review and internal team use.
  • Organize, categorize, and maintain legal documents and electronic case files with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Support legal professionals in the preparation of legal briefs, submissions, and other documents for court proceedings and hearings.
  • Summarize key findings from various legal databases, academic journals, and other reliable sources to aid in strategic planning.
  • Assist with administrative tasks pertinent to judicial support functions, ensuring smooth operational flow.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and case discussions, contributing insights and understanding evolving case strategies.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated (within the last 12 months) from a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) program.
  • Demonstrated strong academic record, particularly in areas requiring legal research, analysis, and writing.
  • Exceptional analytical and critical thinking abilities, with a capacity to distill complex information.
  • Proficiency in utilizing legal research databases such as LexisNexis, Westlaw, AustLII, and other relevant online resources.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, coupled with excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work both independently on research tasks and collaboratively as an integral part of a legal team.
  • A high level of integrity, professionalism, and discretion, especially when handling sensitive legal information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a university legal clinic, pro bono work, or volunteer roles within the justice system.
  • A demonstrated interest in public law, constitutional law, judicial administration, or a specific area of law relevant to our services.
  • Familiarity with Queensland legal procedures and court systems is a plus.
