Job Description

Are you a budding marine biologist with a passion for ocean conservation? The Coral Sea Research Institute is offering an exciting Marine Biology Intern position focused on Coastal Conservation. This is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic individual looking to gain hands-on experience in marine science, fieldwork, and conservation strategies in the beautiful and biodiverse waters of Townsville, Queensland. You will work alongside experienced marine scientists, contributing to vital research and practical conservation initiatives. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior researchers with data collection during field surveys (e.g., coral reef health assessments, seagrass monitoring, species identification).
  • Support laboratory tasks including sample processing, data entry, and maintenance of research equipment.
  • Participate in coastal cleanup initiatives and community outreach programs aimed at raising awareness about marine conservation.
  • Learn and apply various scientific methodologies for monitoring marine biodiversity and ecosystem health.
  • Contribute to the preparation of research reports and presentations under supervision.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records of all collected data and observations.

Required Skills

  • Enrolment in or recent completion of a Bachelor's degree in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field.
  • Strong enthusiasm for marine conservation and a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Basic computer proficiency (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Physical fitness and comfort working in marine environments, including boats and potentially shallow water.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous volunteer experience in conservation or environmental projects.
  • Open Water Diver certification (PADI or equivalent).
  • Basic knowledge of local marine flora and fauna.
  • Experience with data entry or statistical software.
  • A valid driver's license.
