Job Description

Key Responsibilities
- Participate in a structured training program covering public health laws, environmental health, and inspection techniques.
- Shadow experienced Public Health Inspectors during routine inspections of food establishments, public facilities, and other regulated environments.
- Learn to identify potential health hazards and violations of public health codes.
- Develop skills in preparing accurate inspection reports and maintaining detailed records.
- Communicate effectively with business owners and the public regarding health regulations and compliance.
- Actively study for and successfully pass required certification exams, funded by CDPH.
- Assist with public health outreach and educational initiatives as needed.
- Adhere to all departmental policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Strong commitment to public service and community health.
- Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to learn and apply complex regulatory information.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation (required for field work).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in public health, environmental science, biology, chemistry, or a related field (or currently pursuing).
- Previous experience in customer service or a role requiring direct public interaction.
- Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish, Polish, or other common languages in Chicago).
