Job Description
Roadrunner Transit is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Public Transportation Planning Intern to join our dynamic team. This entry-level internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public transit planning, operations, and policy development. The intern will support various projects aimed at improving service efficiency, accessibility, and ridership. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates passionate about urban planning, public policy, transportation, or related fields, eager to contribute to the future of public transit in Las Cruces.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist planning staff with data collection, analysis, and mapping related to transit routes, schedules, and ridership.
- Support the development and review of transit plans, service modifications, and operational reports.
- Conduct research on best practices in public transportation, emerging technologies, and funding opportunities.
- Prepare presentations, memos, and other documents for internal and external stakeholders.
- Participate in community outreach events and public meetings, as needed, to gather feedback.
- Utilize GIS software to create maps and analyze spatial data relevant to transit planning.
- Support special projects as assigned by the Planning Department.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of an undergraduate or graduate program in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Public Administration, Geography, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of public transportation principles and urban planning concepts.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Eagerness to learn and contribute to meaningful projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
- Coursework or project experience in transportation planning, statistics, or data analysis.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local transportation regulations.
- Experience with survey design or public outreach.
