Job Description
Join TerraFauna Exotics as a Reptile / Exotic Pet Breeder Assistant and become an integral part of our dedicated team in Bristol. This entry-level to junior role is perfect for individuals with a profound passion for exotic animals, particularly reptiles, and a strong desire to learn and contribute to their specialized care and breeding. You will work closely with experienced breeders and animal care specialists, assisting with daily husbandry, enclosure maintenance, feeding, and monitoring the health and breeding cycles of our diverse collection. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a professional, ethical, and highly specialized environment, with a strong emphasis on training and development.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with daily feeding, watering, and general care routines for a variety of reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates.
- Perform thorough daily cleaning and maintenance of enclosures, ensuring optimal hygiene and environmental conditions.
- Monitor animal health and behavior, reporting any concerns or changes to senior staff.
- Aid in breeding programs, including setting up breeding enclosures, monitoring pairs, and caring for offspring.
- Prepare and administer appropriate diets according to species-specific requirements.
- Maintain detailed records of animal health, feeding, breeding activities, and environmental parameters.
- Assist with habitat enrichment to promote natural behaviors and well-being.
- Handle animals carefully and safely under supervision, following established protocols.
- Contribute to inventory management of supplies, feed, and equipment.
- Participate in ongoing training and adhere to all animal welfare and safety guidelines.
Required Skills
- Genuine passion and enthusiasm for exotic animals, particularly reptiles.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work effectively as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and observational skills.
- Reliable, responsible, and proactive work ethic.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and standing for extended periods.
- Comfortable working with live insects and other feed items.
- Basic computer literacy for record-keeping.
- Must be legally eligible to work in the UK.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience (even personal hobbyist) with reptile or exotic animal husbandry is a plus, but not essential, as full training will be provided.
- Relevant certifications in animal care, zoology, or veterinary assisting are advantageous.
- Knowledge of various reptile species, their care requirements, and breeding behaviors.
