Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated School Counselor / Guidance Counselor to join our pastoral care team at The Geelong College. This vital role involves providing comprehensive guidance and support services to students across various age groups, addressing academic, social, emotional, and career development needs. The successful candidate will play a crucial part in fostering a positive and inclusive school environment, working collaboratively with staff, parents, and external professionals to ensure student well-being and success. Key Responsibilities

• Provide individual and group counseling to students across primary and secondary levels.
• Develop and implement guidance programs on topics such as mental health awareness, study skills, career exploration, and conflict resolution.
• Collaborate effectively with teachers, parents, and administration to support student well-being and academic progress.
• Refer students and families to appropriate external support services and community resources when necessary.
• Respond to crisis situations promptly and provide immediate support to students in distress.
• Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date student records in compliance with school policies and legal requirements.
• Participate actively in professional development activities to stay current with best practices and emerging trends in school counseling.
• Assist students with post-secondary planning, university applications, and career pathway advice.

Required Skills

• Master's degree in School Counseling, Guidance Counseling, Psychology, or a closely related field.
• Valid counseling certification/registration in Victoria or eligibility to obtain prior to commencement.
• Strong understanding of child and adolescent development, including common developmental challenges and mental health concerns.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills with the ability to build rapport with students, parents, and staff.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse student populations, catering to individual needs and backgrounds.
• Proven ability to maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to ethical practice guidelines.
• Proficiency in crisis intervention and conflict resolution techniques.
• A deeply empathetic and student-centered approach to counseling and guidance.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience (2+ years) working as a School Counselor or Guidance Counselor in a K-12 school setting.
• Experience with career guidance software and resources relevant to Australian post-secondary education.
• Knowledge of local community mental health and support resources available in the Geelong and broader Victorian region.
• Bilingual abilities are considered a valuable asset.
