Job Description
We are seeking a compassionate and responsible Special Needs Transport Assistant to join our team in Brisbane. This vital role involves safely transporting children and young adults with diverse special needs to and from school, therapy appointments, and other essential locations. The position is structured with split shifts (morning and afternoon runs), making it an ideal opportunity for parents seeking flexible work arrangements that align with school hours. Full training will be provided to ensure you are confident and capable in this rewarding role, focusing on safe driving practices, passenger assistance, and understanding the specific needs of our clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate a company vehicle to transport passengers with special needs according to a set schedule.
- Assist passengers with boarding and alighting the vehicle, including securing wheelchairs or other mobility aids.
- Ensure the comfort and safety of all passengers throughout the journey.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, reporting any defects or issues promptly.
- Communicate effectively and empathetically with passengers, their families, and school staff.
- Maintain a clean and tidy vehicle interior.
- Adhere to all traffic laws, company policies, and safety procedures.
- Complete necessary paperwork and daily logs accurately.
Required Skills
- Valid Australian Driver's License (appropriate class for vehicle size, typically C class).
- Excellent driving record with no major infractions.
- Demonstrated patience, empathy, and a caring attitude towards individuals with special needs.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively during split shifts.
- Willingness to obtain and maintain a Working With Children Check (Blue Card) and National Police Check.
- Basic first aid certification or willingness to obtain.
- Reliability and punctuality are essential.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience (personal or professional) working with or caring for individuals with special needs.
- Familiarity with the Brisbane metropolitan area and local road networks.
- Experience operating vehicles with accessibility features (e.g., wheelchair lifts) – training provided.
- A positive and proactive approach to problem-solving.
