Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and empathetic State/Provincial Disability Claims Processor to join our team in Orillia. In this rewarding role, you will be responsible for managing a caseload of disability claims from initial intake through resolution. This involves reviewing medical documentation, assessing eligibility based on policy terms, communicating with claimants and healthcare providers, and ensuring timely and accurate benefit payments. This position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a compassionate approach to supporting individuals during challenging times. You will play a crucial role in delivering on our promise to provide financial security and support to our policyholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of short-term and long-term disability claims, ensuring timely and accurate processing.
  • Review and interpret complex medical information, diagnostic reports, and functional assessments to determine claim eligibility.
  • Communicate effectively with claimants, employers, healthcare professionals, and legal representatives to gather necessary information and provide claim updates.
  • Apply policy provisions, legislative requirements, and company guidelines to make informed claim decisions.
  • Calculate and authorize benefit payments, ensuring compliance with all internal controls and external regulations.
  • Identify and investigate potential fraud or misrepresentation in claims.
  • Collaborate with vocational rehabilitation specialists and medical consultants as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive claim records in the system.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current with industry trends and regulations.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in claims processing, insurance, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply policy language and medical terminology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong customer service orientation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • High level of empathy, integrity, and professionalism.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., business, health sciences, social work).
  • Experience with disability claims processing specifically.
  • Knowledge of Canadian provincial and federal disability legislation.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.
