Job Description

Are you a bright and ambitious engineering student with a passion for thermodynamics and heat transfer? Valero Energy Corporation is seeking a Thermodynamics & Heat Transfer Intern to join our dynamic engineering team in San Antonio, TX. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a real-world industrial setting, working alongside experienced engineers on critical projects related to energy efficiency, process optimization, and system design within our refining operations. You will apply theoretical knowledge to practical challenges, contributing to tangible improvements and sustainable solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior engineers with data collection, analysis, and interpretation related to heat exchangers, furnaces, and other thermodynamic systems.
  • Conduct literature reviews and research on best practices for heat transfer optimization and energy conservation.
  • Support the development and validation of thermodynamic models and simulations.
  • Participate in process flow diagram (PFD) and piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) reviews.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation of findings and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify areas for process improvement and efficiency gains.
  • Learn to use engineering software tools relevant to thermodynamics and heat transfer analysis.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and company guidelines.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Chemical, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline.
  • Fundamental understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer principles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Eagerness to learn and a proactive attitude.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed coursework in heat exchanger design, combustion, or energy systems.
  • Previous experience with engineering simulation software (e.g., Aspen HYSYS, ANSYS Fluent, MATLAB).
  • Demonstrated participation in engineering projects or relevant student organizations.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
