Job Description

The City of Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual for the position of Trainee Arson Investigator. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior Arson Investigators in examining fire scenes to determine origin and cause.
  • Learn and apply techniques for evidence collection, preservation, and documentation.
  • Participate in interviewing witnesses, victims, and suspects under supervision.
  • Document findings through detailed notes, sketches, and photography.
  • Assist in the preparation of investigative reports and case files.
  • Maintain and calibrate specialized investigative equipment.
  • Adhere to all legal protocols and departmental procedures related to fire investigations.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and training sessions.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Strong observational and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and in challenging environments.
  • Valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver's License.
  • Physical ability to navigate fire scenes, often involving debris and uneven terrain.
  • Commitment to public service and ethical conduct.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new investigative techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in criminology, fire science, forensic science, or a related field.
  • Experience in a public safety or emergency services environment (e.g., volunteer firefighter, security guard).
  • Basic knowledge of fire behavior and building construction.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
