Job Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Trainee Environmental Health Officer to join our dynamic public health team. This is an exceptional entry-level opportunity for individuals with little to no prior experience in environmental health. You will undergo a structured training program designed to equip you with the knowledge and practical skills required to excel in environmental health inspections, investigations, and public health promotion. Under the direct supervision of experienced Environmental Health Officers, you will learn to interpret and apply relevant legislation, conduct site visits, assess risks, and contribute to the overall health and safety of the Sherbrooke community. Full training and mentorship will be provided, making this an ideal role for someone eager to start a career in the public sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in a comprehensive training program covering all aspects of environmental health.
- Assist experienced Environmental Health Officers with routine inspections of food establishments, public facilities, and residential properties.
- Shadow senior officers during investigations into public health complaints and environmental hazards.
- Learn to interpret and apply municipal bylaws, provincial regulations, and federal guidelines related to environmental health.
- Support in the preparation of reports and documentation following inspections and investigations.
- Contribute to public education initiatives on environmental health topics.
- Develop skills in risk assessment and problem-solving pertaining to environmental health issues.
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to the departmental database.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and other municipal departments.
Required Skills
- Strong willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite).
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license (or equivalent) and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Proficiency in French (oral and written) is essential, English is an asset.
- Demonstrated interest in public health, environmental science, or related fields.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in a relevant discipline (e.g., science, public health, environmental studies) is an asset, but not required.
- Volunteer experience in a community or public service setting.
- Basic knowledge of local environmental regulations.
