Job Description
Are you eager to launch a career in public service and environmental management? The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join our team as a Trainee Waste Management Supervisor. This entry-level position is designed for individuals with little to no prior experience in waste management, offering comprehensive on-the-job training and mentorship. You will learn the essential skills and knowledge required to supervise waste collection operations, ensure compliance with environmental regulations, and contribute to the efficient functioning of our city’s waste disposal and recycling programs. Key Responsibilities
- Participate actively in a structured training program covering all aspects of waste management operations.
- Shadow experienced supervisors and staff to learn best practices in waste collection, disposal, and recycling.
- Assist in monitoring daily waste collection routes and ensuring operational efficiency.
- Learn to identify and resolve operational issues, such as missed collections or equipment malfunctions.
- Understand and enforce safety protocols and environmental regulations.
- Aid in preparing daily reports and maintaining accurate records of activities.
- Communicate effectively with collection crews, dispatch, and residents regarding service inquiries.
- Contribute to maintaining a positive and productive work environment.
- Undertake ad-hoc duties as required to support the Waste Management Division.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Wisconsin Driver's License and a clean driving record.
- Strong willingness to learn and adapt in a dynamic environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite).
- Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach.
- Physical ability to perform duties which may include lifting up to 50 lbs and working in various weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some customer service or public interaction experience.
- An expressed interest in environmental issues or public works.
- Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) after training.
