Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Tunneling Engineer to join our dynamic team in Gateshead. This is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to significant infrastructure projects, both locally and internationally, focusing on the design, analysis, and construction support for tunnels and underground structures. You will be integral to project lifecycles, from feasibility studies and conceptual design through to detailed engineering and on-site technical assistance, ensuring the successful delivery of complex tunneling solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform geotechnical and structural analysis for tunnel design and underground space projects.
  • Prepare design calculations, technical specifications, and reports in accordance with relevant standards.
  • Develop and review engineering drawings using CAD software.
  • Provide technical support during tender processes and construction phases, including site visits and problem-solving.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, clients, and stakeholders to ensure project objectives are met.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of design processes and technical standards within the team.
  • Mentor junior engineers and share technical knowledge across the department.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in tunneling or underground construction projects (minimum 3 years).
  • Proficiency in geotechnical and structural analysis software (e.g., PLAXIS, GMSYS, SAP2000).
  • Strong understanding of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and tunnel support systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and manage multiple priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status or actively working towards it.
  • Experience with BIM methodologies and relevant software.
  • On-site construction supervision experience for tunneling projects.
  • Familiarity with UK and international design codes and standards.
