Job Description
Are you passionate about making a tangible difference in people’s lives? Telford and Wrekin Council is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Local Council Homeless Outreach Worker to join our vital team. This is an incredible opportunity to provide crucial support to vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness in our community, helping them to find stability and regain independence. As an Outreach Worker, you will be at the forefront of our efforts to tackle homelessness, engaging directly with individuals on the streets and in temporary accommodations. Your work will involve building trusting relationships, assessing immediate needs, and connecting people with the essential services they require, including housing, healthcare, and welfare support. Key Responsibilities
- Proactively engage with individuals experiencing homelessness across the Telford and Wrekin area, including street outreach.
- Conduct comprehensive needs assessments to identify barriers to housing and well-being.
- Develop and implement personalised support plans in collaboration with service users.
- Provide information, advice, and advocacy on housing options, welfare benefits, health services, and employment opportunities.
- Work collaboratively with internal council departments and external partner agencies (e.g., charities, health services, police) to ensure integrated support.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date records of all client interactions and interventions.
- Respond effectively to crisis situations, escalating concerns as appropriate.
- Advocate on behalf of service users to ensure their voices are heard and their rights respected.
Required Skills
- Demonstrable experience (minimum 12 months, which can include voluntary work) in a role involving direct support, community work, or a similar field.
- Exceptional communication, listening, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust with diverse individuals.
- A non-judgmental, empathetic, and patient approach to supporting vulnerable people.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage a caseload effectively.
- Problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and under pressure.
- A good understanding of the issues faced by people experiencing homelessness, or a strong willingness to learn and develop this knowledge.
- Proficiency in using IT systems for record keeping and communication.
- Ability to work flexibly, including occasional evenings or weekends, as the needs of the service require.
Preferred Qualifications
- A qualification in social care, housing, counselling, or a related field (e.g., NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care).
- Knowledge of local housing legislation, welfare benefits, and support services available in Telford and Wrekin.
- A full UK driving license and access to a vehicle for business use.
