Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Fire Protection Lead to join our major construction projects in Maitland, NSW. In this critical role, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of fire protection systems, ensuring compliance with Australian standards, project specifications, and safety regulations. You will lead a dedicated team, manage subcontractors, and act as the primary point of contact for fire protection matters throughout the project lifecycle. This position requires a proactive leader with a deep understanding of fire safety engineering, installation, and commissioning within large-scale construction environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all fire protection activities on major construction projects, from design review through to commissioning and handover.
- Ensure strict compliance with relevant Australian Standards (e.g., AS 1670, AS 1851, AS 2118, AS 2419), Building Codes of Australia (BCA), and project-specific requirements.
- Develop, implement, and monitor fire safety plans and procedures.
- Coordinate with architects, engineers, project managers, and subcontractors to integrate fire protection systems seamlessly into project designs.
- Oversee the installation, testing, and maintenance of various fire protection systems, including sprinkler systems, fire hydrants, hose reels, fire detection and alarm systems, and passive fire protection measures.
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to ensure quality of work and adherence to safety protocols.
- Manage budgets, schedules, and resources for fire protection scope of work.
- Prepare detailed reports on project progress, compliance, and any issues encountered.
- Mentor and develop junior team members and site personnel on fire safety best practices.
- Liaise with fire authorities, building certifiers, and other stakeholders to obtain necessary approvals and ensure regulatory compliance.
Required Skills
- Minimum 5 years of experience in fire protection leadership within major construction projects.
- Thorough knowledge of Australian Building Codes (BCA) and relevant Australian Standards for fire protection systems.
- Proven ability to manage and lead fire protection teams and subcontractors.
- Strong project management skills, including budgeting, scheduling, and risk management.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve complex fire protection issues.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Fire Safety Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Relevant industry certifications (e.g., FPA Australia Fire Protection Accreditation Scheme).
- Experience with BIM (Building Information Modeling) for fire protection design and coordination.
- Knowledge of various fire suppression agents and systems (e.g., gas suppression).
