Job Description

As a Patient Access Representative for the Emergency Room Front Desk, you will be the first point of contact for patients and visitors seeking emergency care. This vital role involves managing patient registration, verifying insurance, collecting co-pays, and providing essential information in a fast-paced, high-stress environment. You will ensure a smooth and efficient patient flow, contributing significantly to a positive patient experience and the operational success of our emergency department. Strong communication skills, empathy, and the ability to multitask are crucial.

Key Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist patients and visitors to the Emergency Room with professionalism and compassion.
  • Accurately register patients, gather demographic information, and input data into the hospital's electronic health record system.
  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits, and obtain necessary authorizations.
  • Explain hospital policies, patient rights, and financial responsibilities to patients and guardians.
  • Collect co-payments, deductibles, and outstanding balances.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Answer incoming calls and direct them appropriately.
  • Collaborate effectively with clinical staff and other departments to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Manage waiting room logistics and communicate wait times as necessary.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 6 months of experience in a healthcare administrative or customer service role.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computer systems and electronic health records (EHR).
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated empathy and compassion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in healthcare administration or a related field.
  • Experience with medical terminology and billing procedures.
  • Prior experience in an emergency department or acute care setting.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
