Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Space Debris Mitigation Research Intern to join our dynamic team in St Helens. This internship offers a unique opportunity for students or recent graduates to contribute to cutting-edge research in a critical area of space sustainability. You will work alongside experienced scientists and engineers, gaining hands-on experience in data analysis, simulation, and the development of strategies to reduce and manage space debris. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about space, environmental science, and problem-solving, with a strong desire to learn and make a tangible impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the collection and analysis of orbital tracking data to identify and characterize space debris.
  • Support the development and validation of computational models for debris propagation and collision risk assessment.
  • Conduct literature reviews on existing and emerging space debris mitigation techniques.
  • Contribute to the drafting of research reports, presentations, and technical documentation.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions on research directions and methodologies.
  • Learn to utilize specialized software tools for orbital mechanics and simulation.
  • Help prepare experimental setups for testing novel debris capture or removal technologies.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Astrophysics, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a related STEM field.
  • Demonstrated interest in space science, orbital mechanics, and environmental sustainability.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R) or willingness to learn quickly.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative research team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior academic project work or coursework related to orbital mechanics, space systems, or environmental modeling.
  • Familiarity with satellite tracking data or space situational awareness concepts.
  • Experience with scientific computing environments.
  • Knowledge of CAD software or simulation tools (e.g., Ansys, STK).
