Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and organized Public Sector Fleet Dispatcher to join our Transport Department. In this vital role, you will be responsible for the efficient scheduling, routing, and deployment of our diverse fleet of vehicles and personnel across Glasgow. This position requires strong communication skills, a calm demeanor under pressure, and the ability to optimize resources to meet operational demands and service level agreements for various council services. You will be a key point of contact for drivers and departments, ensuring smooth coordination and rapid response to any issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, and dispatch fleet vehicles and personnel for daily operations, maintenance, and emergency responses.
  • Monitor fleet movements and driver performance using telematics systems, ensuring adherence to schedules and safety regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with drivers, field staff, and departmental managers regarding assignments, delays, and critical updates.
  • Manage and record vehicle availability, service requests, and maintenance schedules to minimize downtime.
  • Respond promptly to unforeseen circumstances, rerouting vehicles and adjusting schedules as necessary to maintain service continuity.
  • Maintain accurate dispatch logs, records, and reports related to fleet activity, mileage, and fuel consumption.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant transport legislation, council policies, and health and safety guidelines.
  • Collaborate with other departments to understand their transport needs and provide effective solutions.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the Transport Department.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in a dispatch, logistics, or transport coordination role.
  • Excellent geographical knowledge of Glasgow and surrounding areas.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in using dispatch software, telematics systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to make quick, sound decisions under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Understanding of fleet operations and relevant transport regulations.
  • Commitment to public service and efficient resource management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • SVQ or similar qualification in Logistics, Transport, or Business Administration.
  • Experience working within a public sector or local government environment.
  • Knowledge of public sector procurement processes related to fleet management.
  • First Aid qualification.
